The Magnitude-diameter Relation of Galaxies
نویسنده
چکیده
Aims. We investigate the dependence of the luminosity-diameter relation of galaxies on the environment. Methods. This study is based on a comparison between the 80 galaxies in the Shapley-Ames Catalog that are located within a distance of 10 Mpc, and the luminosity-diameter relation for galaxies in great clusters such as Virgo and Coma. Results. A relatively tight linear correlation is observed between the absolute magnitudes and the logarithms of the linear diameters of galaxies located within 10 Mpc. Surprisingly this observed power-law relationship appears to be almost independent of environment and local mass density as defined by Karachentsev & Malakov. However, at a given luminosity, early-type galaxies are (on average) slightly more compact than are objects of a later type. Unexpectedly the present results appear to indicate that the luminosity-diameter relation for the galaxies within 10 Mpc is indistinguishable from what is observed in the much denser Virgo cluster. Conclusions. Galaxies appear to form an almost one-dimensional family in parameter space. It remains a mystery why the luminosity-diameter relation for galaxies is so insensitive to environment.

DASTWAR: a tool for completeness estimation in magnitude-size plane
Today, great observatories around the world, devote a substantial amount of observing time to sky surveys. The resulted images are inputs of source finder modules. These modules search for the target objects and provide us with source catalogues. We sought to quantify the ability of detection tools in recovering faint galaxies regularly encountered in deep surveys. Our approach was based on com...
متن کاملX. H0 from the inverse B-band Tully-Fisher relation using diameter and magnitude limited samples
We derive the value of H0 using the inverse diameter and magnitude B-band Tully-Fisher relations and the large all-sky sample KLUN (5171 spiral galaxies). Our kinematical model was that of Peebles centered at Virgo. Our calibrator sample consisted of 15 field galaxies with cepheid distance moduli measured mostly with HST. A straightforward application of the inverse relation yielded H0 ≈ 80 km ...

Maximum-likelihood estimates are made for the exponent p in the phenomenological redshift-distance relation z [unk] r(p) for galaxies at redshifts less, similar0.03, on the basis of redshift (z)-magnitude (m)-apparent diameter (theta) observations given in the Reference Catalogue of Bright Galaxies [de Vaucouleurs, G. & de Vaucouleurs, A. (1964)]. The estimates are in the range 1.96 </= p </= 2...
متن کاملMass-diameter Relation of Globular Star Clusters, Elliptical Galaxies and Spherical Clusters of Galaxies
In a preceeding paper alternative reflections on gravitation were developed. There it was assumed that the primary interaction between two masses is not of attractive but of repulsive nature. The repulsive force results from the impuls transfer produced by the gravitational radiation which is emitted and absorbed by both masses. The observed attractive force between the two masses according to ...

We present an analysis of the color-magnitude-velocity dispersion relation for a sample of 39320 earlytype galaxies within the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We demonstrate that the color-magnitude relation is entirely a consequence of the fact that both the luminosities and colors of these galaxies are correlated with stellar velocity dispersions. Previous studies of the color-magnitude relation ov...
